City attorney comes with bigger salary
The City Council voted 5-2 Tuesday evening to hire a city attorney at about 40 percent more than the position formerly paid.
John Vincent, who has served several years as city attorney for Lawton, was hired at $86,500 per year.
His predecessor, Frank Medearis, earned $62,000 per year. He resigned the post earlier this year.
Assistant City Attorney Roy Tucker, who has served as interim in the job, was one of three finalists for the position.
Mayor John Tyler Hammons and Councilors Shawn Raper, David Jones, Jim Ritchey and Robert Perkins voted for hiring Vincent. David Ragsdale Jr. and Jackie Luckey voted no. Bob Luttrull and James Gulley were absent.
Hammons said the increase in salary was largely because the city had surveyed attorney salaries for a number of other cities of comparable size to Muskogee and found the average salary to be considerably higher than Muskogee’s.
More money was added to that to compensate Vincent for his experience, Hammons said.
City Manager Greg Buckley, who was hired last year at an annual wage of $110,000, said he had worked with Vincent at the City of Lawton the last several years. He said he is extremely qualified.
Among Vincent’s credentials is that he is president of the Oklahoma Association of Municipal Attorneys, works with the Oklahoma Municipal League and the Oklahoma Municipal Utility Providers Association.
He served as city attorney for Midwest City before going to Lawton.
